Vitamins can trigger severe complications in pregnant

High doses of vitamins taken by a woman during pregnancy increases the risk of dangerous complications - preeclampsia, said journal The Lancet.

Preeklampsia may arise in the second half of pregnancy, while women have sharply increased blood pressure, that endangers the lives of mother and fetus.

Pre-eclampsia it was believed that the development preeclampsia linked to the negative effects of free radicals - toxic molecules formed in the placenta. As a result, scientists assumed that high doses of vitamins C and E, with antioxidant properties, will be able to protect women from this dangerous complications.

The study, conducted by scientists from the Centre charity Tommy's, 2400 participated pregnant belonging to a group of high-risk development preeclampsia: women with high blood pressure who have problems with the kidneys, as well as suffering from violations of collapse blood or diabetes.

All women received high doses of vitamins C and E or a placebo (inactive substance).

The study showed that vitamins are not only not protected from preeclampsia, but, instead, contributed to its development. For women who received high doses of vitamins C and E, preeclampsia emerged a week earlier than women who took placebo. In addition, women who took vitamins, children with low weight born at 15% more often than women from the control group.

"… Our research showed that high doses of vitamins C and E are not able to prevent pre-eclampsia women from high-risk groups", said study author Lyusilla Poston (Lucilla Poston).

Scientists noted that similar studies of the polivitamin for pregnant women were not, therefore, should not automatically transfer the results also apply to these drugs. Moreover, a number of vitamins, particularly folic acid, are essential for the normal course of pregnancy, the researchers noted.
